Conference Registration Guide

The National Poetry Foundation Conference on the Poetry of the 1970s will be held on the flagship campus of the University of Maine System in Orono, Maine, between June 11-15, 2008.

This page is intended to guide Conference participants through the simple online registration process. (Online registration requires a credit card; for other forms of payment, please contact us.)

REGISTRATION BASICS

First, select the appropriate level of registration.

Tip: Be sure that the "Select Quantity" box reads "1," then click "Add to Cart."

Next, select the type of optional on-campus accommodation you are requesting. (Information about off-campus lodging is available below.)

Tip: Use the "Select Quantity" box to indicate the number of nights you will be staying, then click "Add to Cart."

Next, select the type of meal you would like to be served at Friday night's banquet.

And finally, click here to reserve a (free) space on the bus to Saturday morning's plenary event in the Paul J. Schupf Wing for the Works of Alex Katz at the Colby College Museum of Art in nearby Waterville, Maine. This option is strongly recommended for participants who will not have their own means of transportion. Seats must be reserved in advance through the NPF by no later than 15 May 2008.

Once you've filled your cart, proceed to checkout from the window that shows all the items you have selected (closing any stray windows opened earlier in the "add to cart" process). You will be asked to provide some order information, then will have a chance to review and confirm your order.

If you encounter any problems with the online registration process, feel free to register by phone during business hours (EDT) at 207-581-3813.

GETTING TO THE CONFERENCE

The NPF is pleased to recommend experienced local travel agent Judith Carr, of Hewins Travel, to those Conference participants who might like assistance in planning their travel to the Bangor area. Judith, who has ably handled our New Writing Series travel arrangements for many years now, is available 9am-5pm EDT at 1-800-370-0777, ext. 2.

The airport nearest to Orono is Bangor International, which is served by Northwest, Delta, Continental, and US Airways (but not American). Travel time between Bangor Airport and the UMaine campus is only about 15 minutes ($25 cab fare).

The Portland Jetport is a little more than two hours south of Orono and is served by JetBlue, among other carriers. Concord Trailways runs four buses between Bangor and Portland each day and tends to be both quicker and more comfortable than Greyhound.

Boston's Logan Airport is about five hours south of Bangor. Manchester Airport, in New Hampshire, is about the same distance.

Unfortunately, Maine is only served by Amtrak as far north as Portland.

OPTIONS FOR OFF-CAMPUS ACCOMMODATIONS

The NPF recommends the University Inn to Conference participants who are looking for a convenient alternative to on-campus accommodations. When making reservations at 1-800-321-4921, please be sure to mention your affiliation with the Conference.

Click here for a range of further options for off-campus accommodations.
